About Subaru
Subaru is the automobile division of Subaru Corporation, a Japanese manufacturer known for decades as Fuji Heavy Industries. The company’s roots trace back to 1917, when Chikuhei Nakajima founded an aircraft research lab that grew into the Nakajima Aircraft Company. How to read a Subaru VIN: position by position
Every Subaru VIN built since 1981 uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a Subaru:
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. The country code at position 1 tells you where the vehicle was assembled, not where Subaru is headquartered. A Subaru assembled at SIA in Lafayette, Indiana, carries a US-registered WMI (4S3 or 4S4) rather than a Japan-registered one (JF1-JF4), even though the vehicle is a full Subaru product built to the same specification.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
These five characters identify the model line (Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, Legacy, Ascent, WRX, and others), body style, drivetrain, engine displacement, and restraint system fitted to the vehicle. Subaru uses this block consistently across its lineup to distinguish trim families such as base, Premium, Limited, Touring, and STI/WRX performance variants.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Subaru, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory where the vehicle was built. Subaru vehicles carry different plant codes depending on whether they were assembled at the company’s home facilities in Japan (Gunma prefecture, including the Yajima and Oizumi complexes) or at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette. Positions 12-17: Serial number
