About Lamborghini
Automobili Lamborghini was founded in 1963 in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, by Ferruccio Lamborghini, who had built his fortune manufacturing tractors. According to the story Lamborghini himself told for decades, he was unhappy with the clutch in his Ferrari 250 GT and drove to Maranello to suggest a fix to Enzo Ferrari, who dismissed him and told him to stick to building tractors. Lamborghini decided to build a better grand tourer himself, and the first car, the 350 GT, appeared at the Turin auto show in 1963.
The company built its reputation on the Miura (1966), widely credited as the first true mid-engine supercar, and cemented it with the wedge-shaped Countach (1974). Later generations include the Diablo, Murcielago, Aventador, Huracan, and the Revuelto hybrid, alongside the Urus, Lamborghini’s first SUV since the 1986 LM002. Volkswagen Group, through Audi AG, has owned Lamborghini since June 1998, when Audi bought the company from Indonesian holding group Megatech for a reported $110 million. Every Lamborghini, including the Urus, is still assembled at the original Sant’Agata Bolognese plant, which has been expanded several times but never relocated.
Lamborghini WMI codes (positions 1-3)

How to read a Lamborghini VIN: position by position
Every Lamborghini built since 1981 uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a Lamborghini:
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. On older Lamborghinis (WMI “ZA9”), the small-manufacturer flag at position 3 means the real submanufacturer code sits at positions 12-14 rather than in the first three characters alone.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This block encodes the model line, body configuration, engine, and restraint system. Position 4 commonly flags the destination market (for example, a distinct character for USA-spec cars versus Europe-spec). Position 8 typically distinguishes the specific model variant, such as which Huracan or Aventador derivative the VIN belongs to. Exact character assignments vary by generation, which is why running the VIN through the decoder above, rather than reading it by eye, is the reliable way to confirm the model.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Lamborghini VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.
Position 10: Model year

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Lamborghini, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. On Lamborghini VINs this is consistently L, for Sant’Agata Bolognese, Bologna, Italy, the only plant Lamborghini has ever operated, from the 350 GT through the Urus and Revuelto.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific Lamborghini as it rolled off the line. On earlier “ZA9” VINs, positions 12-14 double as the submanufacturer subcode described above, with the remaining digits completing the serial run.
