Jaguar F-Pace WMI codes (positions 1-3)

That registration date isn’t a coincidence. NHTSA’s WMI registry shows SAD went live on April 28, 2016, right as F-Pace production was ramping up, consistent with the F-Pace being the vehicle that made Jaguar register an SUV-specific (MPV-classified) WMI for the first time. Jaguar’s saloons and sports cars (XE, XF, F-Type) use a different WMI, SAJ, registered as a Passenger Car rather than an MPV. How to read a Jaguar F-Pace VIN: position by position

Every F-Pace uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard, since the model only ever existed after 1981. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This is where a lot of VIN guides get sloppy, so here’s the honest version. Position 4 was C on every F-Pace VIN we decoded, no exceptions, which strongly suggests it’s the character identifying the F-Pace body/model line within Jaguar’s SAD registration. Position 6 was also constant, always 2, likely a body-style or restraint-system flag that doesn’t vary because the F-Pace only ever came as one body style.

Positions 5, 7, and 8 carry engine and trim information, but they don’t reduce to a clean lookup table. In our sample, the same character combinations didn’t map one-to-one to a single engine or trim; a T at position 5 showed up on both 2024 and 2025 P400 and P250 cars. Jaguar Land Rover doesn’t publish an open key for these characters, and NHTSA doesn’t break them out individually either. Positions 5-8 jointly encode engine, restraints, and model-year-specific build variation, and the only reliable way to resolve them is a full VIN decode against NHTSA’s database, which is what the tool above does, rather than a static table.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the single character that catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. The F-Pace’s actual production run only touches part of that cycle: H (2017) through S (2025).
