Chrysler dropped the Durango and its Chrysler Aspen twin after the 2009 model year as the company entered bankruptcy, and there is genuinely no 2010 Dodge Durango: production of the redesigned third-generation truck began December 14, 2010, as a 2011 model. As of this writing (August 2026), the Durango is the only Dodge nameplate still assembled in the United States, and it remains in production for the 2026 model year. Stellantis simplified the 2026 lineup around HEMI V8 power across the board: GT gets the 5.7L HEMI, R/T moves up to the 6.4L 392 HEMI, and SRT Hellcat keeps its 6.2L supercharged HEMI, while the long-running 3.6L Pentastar V6 has been dropped entirely. Industry reporting, not an official Stellantis statement, suggests a next-generation Durango on a different platform has been pushed to 2029 or later under the current UAW production plan, so treat any specific “final year” claim elsewhere with caution until Stellantis confirms it.

The switch from 1B4 to 1D4 happened partway through the first generation, not at a clean model-year or generation boundary: our decoded sample shows 1B4 on 1998, 1999, and 2002 trucks and 1D4 on 2003 trucks, with the 2004-2009 second generation carrying 1D4 throughout. Unlike some other Dodge and Ram nameplates, we found no evidence the Durango was ever built outside the United States; every VIN we decoded, across all three generations, returned Newark, Delaware or Detroit, Michigan as the plant of manufacture. If a Durango listing shows a VIN starting with anything other than 1B4, 1D4, or 1C4, decode it in full before trusting the title.

How to read a Dodge Durango VIN: position by position

Every Durango built since 1998 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 format. Here is what each block means.

Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

One honest gap: the base 3.9L Magnum V6 offered on early 1998-2003 Durangos is well documented in period brochures, but no real-world listing we could locate carried that engine, so its position-8 letter is not confirmed from an actual decoded VIN. Everything else in the table above was pulled from a genuine, checksum-valid VIN and confirmed against NHTSA’s decoder.

Position 9: Check digit

This single character is calculated from the other 16 using a fixed weighting formula and modulo-11 math, purely to catch typos and forged VINs. Change one character anywhere in a real Durango VIN and the math breaks; NHTSA’s decoder, every state DMV, and any compliant VIN tool will flag the mismatch instead of returning results.

Position 10: Model year
