The first-generation Traverse shared the Lambda platform with the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and (through 2010) the Saturn Outlook, all four riding on the same unibody architecture with a transverse-mounted V6. The second and third generations moved to the newer C1XX platform, which also underpins the current Acadia, Enclave, and Cadillac XT5/XT6.
One detail that surprised us when we decoded real production VINs for this page: the Traverse did not start life at Lansing. GM built the first Traverses at its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant from launch in late 2008 through late 2009, then shifted production to Lansing Delta Township, Michigan, where every Traverse since has been built. We confirmed this directly, a real 2009 VIN and a real 2010 VIN both decode to Spring Hill through NHTSA’s vPIC database, while every 2011-and-later VIN we checked, straight through the current 2026 model year, decodes to Lansing Delta Township. If you assumed “Lansing the whole time,” the first two model years are the exception.
Chevrolet Traverse WMI codes (positions 1 to 3)
The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. Every genuine US-market Chevrolet Traverse VIN we decoded, spanning model years 2009 through 2026, began with the same three characters:

How to read a Chevrolet Traverse VIN: position by position
Every Traverse built since 2009 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. Here is what each block means, verified against 15 real production VINs decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC system.
Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier
1GN on every confirmed Traverse. The first digit (1) marks a US-built vehicle, G identifies General Motors, and N narrows it to a Chevrolet MPV/SUV line.
Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where the Traverse’s generation and engine become visible. Two positions inside the VDS held up as reliable across every VIN we checked:
Position 5 (drivetrain). Every AWD Traverse we decoded, across all three generations, carries a V in position 5. Every FWD Traverse carries an R. This held true from a 2011 first-gen LS to a 2026 third-gen LT, so it’s the fastest way to confirm drivetrain from the VIN alone without running a full decode.
Position 8 (engine/powertrain generation). This character lined up cleanly with the engine swap between generations:

One correction worth flagging: it’s easy to assume the second-gen Traverse shares GM’s LGX 3.6L V6 (used in the Acadia, Blazer, and Cadillac XT5/XT6), since LGX and LFX get lumped together as “the GM 3.6”. It doesn’t. Every 2018-2023 Traverse VIN we decoded came back with engine code LFY, a stop/start-equipped update of the older LFX V6, not the newer clean-sheet LGX. The LGX went to Traverse’s platform-mates, not the Traverse itself. Position 4 (L on 2009-2010 VINs, K on 2011-2017 VINs, E on every 2018-2026 VIN we checked) also shifts with generation, but GM has not published an official meaning for that character, so treat it as a series marker rather than something to decode on its own. Positions 6 and 7 carry trim and restraint-system detail that isn’t published in a clean lookup table; the decoder at the top of this page pulls that from GM’s build data directly.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting formula and modulo-11 math. Change one character anywhere in a real Traverse VIN and the math breaks, which is exactly why a garbled VIN gets rejected by state DMVs, NHTSA’s recall database, and any compliant decoder before it ever returns a result.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on a 30-year cycle. Here is the complete, gap-free mapping for every Traverse model year from launch through the current model year:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used, since they can be misread as 1 and 0.
