About the Mini Cooper

The modern Mini Cooper is BMW’s reboot of the classic British Mini, launched for model year 2002 under the R50 (Cooper) and R53 (Cooper S) chassis codes. It is not a continuation of the original 1959-2000 Mini built by BMC, Austin, Rover, and finally BMW itself. It is a new car that borrowed the name and the general shape after BMW sold off the rest of Rover Group in 2000 and kept the Mini brand. Every modern Mini Cooper, across four generations, has been assembled primarily at BMW’s Plant Oxford in Cowley, England, the site where Minis (in one form or another) have been built since 1959.

The China detail is worth spelling out: BMW and Great Wall Motor formed Spotlight Automotive in 2018 to build fully-electric Minis, and the first production Cooper SE (J01) rolled off Spotlight’s Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu plant in October 2023. Every J01 sold in Europe and China since has come from that line, not Oxford. BMW had planned to shift J01 production to a rebuilt, all-electric Oxford plant from 2026, but as of mid-2026 that move has slipped and the electric Cooper is still built exclusively in China. That’s also why it hasn’t reached US Mini dealers: tariffs on Chinese-built vehicles made the import financially unworkable, so Mini paused US plans indefinitely, and the only electric Mini sold in the US remains the Countryman SE, built in Leipzig, Germany. Because the China-built J01 has never been federally registered for US sale, there’s no real US VIN to check against NHTSA’s database for a distinct Chinese WMI. Every J01-era VIN we verified decoded as an Oxford-built car, and we’re flagging that gap honestly rather than guessing.

Mini Cooper WMI codes (positions 1 to 3)

The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO. We decoded fifteen real, checksum-valid Mini Cooper VINs spanning 2003 through 2024 (R50, R52, R53, R56, R57, F55, F56, F57, and current-generation Oxford and Born-built cars) against NHTSA’s vPIC database. Every single one carries the same WMI:

One detail stood out during verification: a 2024-model-year Cooper S Convertible with an NHTSA plant field of “Born, Netherlands” (the VDL Nedcar contract plant that built the F57 convertible until it closed in February 2024) still carries a WMW prefix, same as an Oxford-built hardtop. WMW identifies the corporate registration behind the VIN, not one physical address. We found no real, NHTSA-decodable Mini VIN carrying any WMI other than WMW, including anything specific to the Zhangjiagang plant, for the reason explained above: those cars have not been sold or registered in the US.

How to read a Mini Cooper VIN: position by position

Every Mini Cooper built since 2002 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. The string breaks into three blocks: the WMI (positions 1-3), the Vehicle Descriptor Section or VDS (positions 4-8), and the Vehicle Identifier Section or VIS (positions 9-17, which includes the check digit, model year, plant, and serial number).

Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This is where body style, restraint system, and engine/model detail live. On the R-series cars we decoded (2003-2010), positions 4-6 carried a chassis-family fragment such as RC3 (R50 hatch), RE3 (R53 Cooper S), or MF7/MS3 (R56/R57). On current-generation cars the pattern shifts: a 2024 Cooper 2-door reads 33DK0, a Cooper S hardtop reads 53DK0, a Cooper SE reads 13DJ0, and a Cooper S Convertible reads 43DL0. Mini doesn’t publish a public decode key for these characters, so the safest way to confirm what a given VDS combination means on your car is to run the full VIN through the decoder above rather than reverse-engineering it by eye.

Position 9: Check digit

This single character is calculated from the other 16 using a fixed weighting formula and modulo-11 math defined by federal regulation. It exists purely to catch typos: change any other character in the VIN and the check digit almost certainly stops matching. Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on a 30-year cycle, skipping the letters I, O, and Q because they’re too easily confused with 1 and 0. Here is the complete cycle from 2002 (the first modern Cooper model year) through the current model year:

Positions 12 to 17: Serial number
