Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

Positions 4 to 7: Model line, series, and body detail
Every K5 and late-model Optima VIN checked for this page reads G at position 4, Kia’s internal code for the Optima/K5 sedan body line, not a K5-only code or the DL3 nickname. Kia kept this code running across the rename, since under the marketing name it’s a continuation of the same product. Positions 5 to 7 vary by trim and market spec (14, 64, 44, or 34 were confirmed on real K5 VINs); they’re internal trim-series and restraint codes, not a public standard, so a decoder needs Kia’s reference tables to translate them. Position 8: Engine code

That position-8 letter is why two same-year K5s decode differently: a late-2024 EX reads 7 (the new NA base engine) while a same-year GT reads 8 (the 290-hp turbo). The GT code has stayed constant since launch; only the base engine changed at the facelift.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters via modulo-11 math against a fixed weighting table. Change one character anywhere and the math stops matching; any compliant decoder or state DMV rejects the entry.
Position 10: Model year

I, O, and Q are skipped since they resemble 1 and 0. On a K5 you’ll only see M (2021) onward.
