About the Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer went on sale in March 1990 as a 1991 model, replacing the compact Bronco II and building on the Ranger pickup platform. It is widely credited, alongside the Jeep Grand Cherokee, with popularizing the modern American SUV, and it became the best-selling SUV in the United States for most of the 1990s and 2000s. Since 1991 the Explorer has gone through six generations:

The fifth generation is the single biggest engineering change in the model’s history: Ford dropped the truck-style body-on-frame chassis it had used since 1991 and moved the Explorer onto a unibody platform shared with the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT. The sixth generation moved again, onto the rear-wheel-drive-based CD6 platform it now shares with the Lincoln Aviator.

Note: Ford also sells a European “Explorer EV,” built in Cologne, Germany, on Volkswagen’s MEB platform. It shares only a badge with the American SUV covered here. Every code on this page refers to the US-market, gas-and-hybrid Explorer.

Ford Explorer WMI codes (positions 1 to 3)

The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO. Genuine North American Ford Explorers carry:

Unlike some model lines Ford builds worldwide, the domestic Explorer has been assembled exclusively at US plants since 1991, so 1FM is effectively the only WMI on a genuine US-title Explorer. How to decode a Ford Explorer VIN, position by position

Every Explorer built since 1991 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. The string breaks into three blocks, and each character carries specific meaning.

Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the table above: 1FM on every domestic Explorer. The first character (1) is the country of build (USA), the second (F) is the manufacturer (Ford), and the third (M) encodes vehicle class (SUV/MPV).

Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This works a little differently on Ford than on some other brands. Positions 4 and 5 carry an internal Ford series code (DU, ZU, EU, 5K, and SK all appear across Explorer years), but that code mixes body style, restraint system, and trim rather than spelling out the generation in plain letters. The reliable way to identify generation is model year (position 10) plus the chassis-code range in the table above, or just run the VIN through the decoder at the top of this page.

Position 8 is more useful on its own: it’s the engine code, and Ford keeps it reasonably consistent within each generation. Codes confirmed directly against NHTSA’s VIN database:

Ford also fitted other engines within some of these generations: a 4.6L V8 on the 4th gen, 2.0L and twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost options on the 5th gen, a 3.0L hybrid on the 6th gen. Position 9: Check digit

The check digit catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. Mistype a single character anywhere in the VIN and the math no longer matches; any compliant decoder, every state DMV, and the NHTSA recall database will reject the entry. That’s why “look up by VIN” beats “look up by license plate” when you need to confirm a specific vehicle.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on a 30-year cycle, the same cycle used across the entire industry:

The letters I, O, and Q are skipped because they resemble 1 and 0. The cycle repeats every 30 years: P was 1993 and is again 2023. Since the Explorer has run continuously since 1991, use the chassis-code range above (no U625 existed in 1993) to resolve any ambiguity.

Position 11: Assembly plant

A single character identifies the specific factory. We confirmed each of these directly against NHTSA’s decoder using real Explorer VINs from that plant’s production years:

Positions 12 to 17: Serial number

Where to find the VIN on a Ford Explorer

Several locations on every Explorer, plus the paperwork:

Ford Explorer recalls and safety

The Explorer’s most infamous safety episode is the 2000 Firestone tire recall: Bridgestone/Firestone recalled roughly 14.4 million ATX, ATX II, and Wilderness AT tires, most fitted to second-generation Explorers, after tread-separation failures were linked to rollover crashes. That episode was primarily a tire defect, not one encoded in the Explorer’s VIN, and it led directly to the federal TREAD Act and today’s standard tire-pressure-monitoring systems. Worth knowing, but not something a VIN decode can flag on its own.

More recent, VIN-relevant recalls include:

  • 2011-2019 (5th gen): A-pillar trim retention clips that may not engage properly, allowing interior trim to detach
  • 2018-2019 (5th gen): Manual front seat-back recliner mechanisms that could fail to lock
  • 2020-2022 (6th gen): A rear-axle bolt and subframe bushing that can fracture, creating a rollaway risk even with the shifter in Park; roughly 253,000 vehicles were recalled
  • 2022 (6th gen): A fuel line fitting that may not be fully tightened at the factory
