About Volvo

How to read a Volvo VIN: position by position

Every Volvo VIN built since 1981 uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. The country code at position 1 tells you where the vehicle was assembled, not where Volvo is headquartered. A Volvo assembled outside Sweden (Ridgeville, Ghent, Daqing, Chengdu) carries the country code of the assembly plant, not a Swedish code.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

On modern Volvos (roughly 2010 onward), positions 4 and 5 typically encode engine and drivetrain details, position 7 identifies the specific model line, and position 8 carries trim level, safety equipment, and gross vehicle weight rating classification. Older Volvos (pre-2010) used a different layout in this block, so the same character can mean different things depending on model year.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. On US and Canadian VINs it is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math, as required by federal regulation. If even one character of a Volvo VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.
