About Volkswagen

Volkswagen AG was founded in 1937 in Germany and built its first factory the following year in what became Wolfsburg, the company’s headquarters ever since. The Puebla, Mexico plant has produced Volkswagens since 1964 and builds the Jetta and Tiguan for the North American market. Volkswagen’s US assembly plant is in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which opened in 2011 and currently builds the Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and ID.4; it also built the Passat until production of that model ended there in January 2022. That means a large share of VWs sold in the US, especially Atlas and ID.4 models, carry an American-built VIN rather than a German one.

Volkswagen WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO, and the codes below are drawn from the NHTSA vPIC registry, the same database used by law enforcement and insurers.

How to read a Volkswagen VIN: position by position

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. The country code at position 1 tells you where the vehicle was assembled, not where Volkswagen is headquartered. A VW assembled outside Germany (Puebla, Chattanooga, Sao Bernardo do Campo) carries the country code of the assembly plant, not of Wolfsburg.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

Volkswagen uses these five characters to encode the model line, body style, restraint system, and engine or drivetrain family. A Golf, Jetta, Tiguan, Atlas, and ID.4 each carry a distinct VDS pattern, and the same model can vary by engine (gas, diesel, or electric) and trim within this block.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Volkswagen VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.
