Vauxhall is a UK-market-only brand: the same cars are sold across continental Europe under the Opel badge, so if you’ve researched a “sister” model with an Opel nameplate, you’ve found the right family, just the wrong sticker. Nearly everyone searching for a Vauxhall VIN decoder is looking up a car registered in the UK, and this page is built around that reality: UK plant codes, the UK’s official recall checker, and the DVLA paperwork you’ll actually be holding.
This page is the Vauxhall VIN hub. Below you’ll find Vauxhall-specific WMI codes, the brand’s assembly plants, a position-by-position guide to reading a Vauxhall VIN, where to find the VIN on your car, and direct links to VIN decoders for individual models.
About Vauxhall
Vauxhall traces its roots to 1857, when Scottish marine engineer Alexander Wilson founded a pump and marine engine works on Wandsworth Road in the Vauxhall district of London, initially trading as Alex Wilson and Company and later as Vauxhall Iron Works. The company built its first car in 1903, a five-horsepower single-cylinder model with a tiller instead of a steering wheel, and adopted the name Vauxhall Motors in 1907, shortly after shifting the bulk of production to Luton in 1905.
General Motors acquired Vauxhall in 1925 and ran it alongside its German sister brand Opel for over nine decades, with the two increasingly sharing platforms, engines, and even body panels badge-for-badge. In 2017, GM sold both Opel and Vauxhall to France’s PSA Group (then home to Peugeot and Citroën) for $2.3 billion. When PSA merged with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in January 2021, Vauxhall became part of the newly formed Stellantis, the multinational group it belongs to today.
Because Opel and Vauxhall have shared engineering since well before the Stellantis era, a Vauxhall Corsa and an Opel Corsa are mechanically the same car with different badges and, in most cases, the same VIN manufacturer code. Vauxhall’s UK manufacturing footprint has shrunk sharply in recent years: the historic Luton plant, in continuous operation since 1905, closed in April 2025 as Stellantis consolidated van production elsewhere in Europe. Ellesmere Port, on the Wirral, was reopened in 2023 as the UK’s first EV-only volume car plant and now builds electric versions of the Combo and Vivaro-based vans alongside Citroën, Peugeot, and Fiat siblings on the same shared platform.
Vauxhall WMI codes (positions 1–3)
The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO, and it is a global registry, not a national one, which is why a UK-only brand like Vauxhall still carries a code registered against its manufacturer of record, Opel Automobile GmbH, in Rüsselsheim, Germany.
| WMI | Country of registration | Vehicle type |
|---|---|---|
| W0L | Germany | Opel/Vauxhall passenger cars: the primary shared WMI used across both badges regardless of actual assembly country |
| W0V | Germany | Opel/Vauxhall: WMI variant seen on Stellantis-era (post-2017) passenger cars and light commercials |
Because Opel and Vauxhall are corporately registered as the same manufacturer, both badges typically share the same WMI. The country code reflects where the manufacturer is registered (Germany), not necessarily where your individual car rolled off the line. If your Vauxhall VIN begins with an unlisted WMI, it may indicate a rebadge, a parts-bin engine donor from a related Stellantis brand, or a data-entry error. Decode the full VIN with the tool above to confirm.
How to read a Vauxhall VIN: position by position
Every Vauxhall VIN built to the modern standard uses the ISO 3779 17-character format, the same international standard used worldwide, including in the US and UK. The 17 characters split into three blocks:
| Block | Positions | What it encodes |
|---|---|---|
| World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) | 1 – 3 | Country of manufacturer registration and manufacturer |
| Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) | 4 – 8 | Model, body, engine, restraints |
| Check digit | 9 | Math-validated control character |
| Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) | 10 – 17 | Model year, plant, serial |
Here is what each position means specifically on a Vauxhall:
Positions 1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. Because Vauxhall and Opel are the same corporate manufacturer, the WMI alone won’t tell you which badge is on the bonnet. The model-specific characters later in the VIN do that.
Positions 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This block encodes the model line, body style, restraint system, and often the engine family. On Vauxhall/Opel VINs this section is where the platform generation (for example, current-generation Corsa/Astra on the CMP/e-CMP platform shared with Peugeot and Citroën) is distinguished from older, GM-era platforms.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Vauxhall VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder or DVLA record lookup will flag the VIN as invalid.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle. This is a universal ISO convention used worldwide, not a US-specific rule. Skim the chart below to translate yours:
| Char | Year | Char | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| R | 2024 | F | 2015 |
| S | 2025 | E | 2014 |
| T | 2026 | D | 2013 |
| V | 2027 | C | 2012 |
| W | 2028 | B | 2011 |
| X | 2029 | A | 2010 |
| Y | 2030 | 9 | 2009 |
| 1 | 2031 | 8 | 2008 |
| 2 | 2032 | 7 | 2007 |
| 3 | 2033 | 6 | 2006 |
The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Vauxhall, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory, though Vauxhall/Opel plant codes have shifted more than most manufacturers’ as production has moved between sites over the years. Vauxhall-badged cars built in recent years have come from Eisenach (Germany), Zaragoza (Spain), and Gliwice (Poland), alongside Opel-badged siblings from the same lines. The UK’s Ellesmere Port plant reopened in 2023 as an EV-only van plant building electric Combo and Vivaro-based models; the historic Luton plant, which had built Vauxhalls since 1905, closed in April 2025. Decode the full VIN with the tool above for a precise plant read on your specific car.
Positions 12–17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific Vauxhall as it rolled off the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Vauxhall VIN globally unique.
Where to find the VIN on a Vauxhall
You can find your Vauxhall VIN in several places. The windscreen and door plate are the easiest to read; the others are useful when one of those labels has been damaged or replaced.
- Lower corner of the windscreen, visible from outside the car
- VIN plate on the driver’s side door frame or door pillar
- Stamped into the engine bay, typically near the suspension turret or bulkhead
- Your V5C registration certificate (logbook), issued by the DVLA
- Vauxhall’s own vehicle records via a franchised dealer
If your Vauxhall was built before 1981, the chassis number is shorter than 17 characters and follows an older, pre-ISO format. For pre-1981 vehicles, use our classic car VIN decoder guide.
Check Vauxhall recalls and safety information
In the UK, vehicle safety recalls are tracked and published by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), working with manufacturers and the DVLA. Unlike the US system built around NHTSA, the UK’s official recall checker is registration-number based rather than purely VIN based, so you’ll want both pieces of information to hand. The fastest way to check a specific Vauxhall:
- Decode the VIN with the tool above to confirm the model and model year
- Cross-reference your registration number on the official GOV.UK vehicle recall checker, run on behalf of the government by the DVSA
- Review any open safety actions and contact your nearest Vauxhall dealer or authorised repairer for a free repair
Recalls are repaired free of charge by the manufacturer regardless of the vehicle’s age or ownership history.
Frequently asked questions
How do I decode my Vauxhall VIN?
Type the 17-character VIN from your Vauxhall’s windscreen, door frame plate, or V5C registration certificate into the decoder at the top of this page. Results return in seconds and include make, model, model year, body style, engine family, transmission, plant of origin, and open DVSA recalls. No registration is required.
Where is the VIN on my Vauxhall?
The two easiest spots are the lower corner of the windscreen (visible from outside the car) and the VIN plate on the driver’s side door frame. You’ll also find it printed on your V5C logbook if either physical label has worn away or been replaced.
Is Vauxhall the same as Opel?
Yes. Vauxhall and Opel are sister brands under Stellantis (formerly GM, then PSA Group) selling the same engineering under different badges: Vauxhall in the UK, Opel across most of continental Europe. A Vauxhall Corsa and an Opel Corsa are the same car, and they typically share the same VIN manufacturer code.
Is the Vauxhall VIN decoder free?
Yes. VinDecoderPlus decodes every Vauxhall VIN free of charge with no sign-up or credit card. Full vehicle history reports, including ownership records, accident history, and mileage history, are available as an optional paid upgrade.
What does the VIN tell me about my Vauxhall?
A VIN decode confirms the original factory configuration of your Vauxhall: model, year, body style, engine, transmission, trim level, factory options, and country of origin. It does not record the vehicle’s current mileage, MOT history, or ownership chain. For MOT and mileage history, check the free GOV.UK MOT history service; for a full ownership and accident history report, use a paid vehicle history check.
Can a Vauxhall VIN be faked or cloned?
The 17 characters themselves can be retyped, but the check digit at position 9 makes silent tampering nearly impossible: any single-character change breaks the math. If you suspect a cloned VIN on a used Vauxhall you’re considering, our guide how to check if a car is stolen by VIN walks through the next steps.
