A quick note on market coverage: Tata Motors is an Indian manufacturer. Tata-badged vehicles (Nexon, Punch, Harrier, Safari, Tiago, Altroz, and the Ace/Intra/Yodha commercial range) are sold across India and exported to select markets in South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, but not in the United States. Because of that, this page uses India’s own vehicle-identification and recall framework, administered by MoRTH (the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways), rather than the NHTSA references on this site’s US-market pages. The 17-character VIN structure itself is the same worldwide ISO 3779 standard used by every carmaker, so the decoder above reads a Tata VIN exactly the same way it reads a Ford or Toyota VIN.

About Tata Motors

Tata Motors traces back to 1945, when Tata Sons incorporated Tata Locomotive and Engineering Company to build steam locomotives and boilers at the former “Tatanagar Shops” in Jamshedpur, part of the Tata Group, India’s oldest business conglomerate, founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868. The company moved into road vehicles in 1954 through a technical collaboration with Daimler-Benz, producing India’s first indigenously built heavy trucks. Tata entered the passenger-car segment in 1988 with the Tata Mobile, followed by the Sierra in 1991, and reached a landmark in 1998 with the Tata Indica, widely credited as the first passenger car engineered entirely in India.

Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover from Ford in 2008. JLR is useful context but a separate part of this site. Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles are built in the UK, use different WMI codes, and are covered on their own dedicated pages. This page covers only Tata-badged vehicles.

In late 2025, Tata’s corporate structure was reorganized into two separately listed companies (one for passenger/electric vehicles and JLR, one for commercial vehicles), but that split doesn’t change how VINs are built or decoded: WMI and plant codes continue as before.

Tata WMI codes (positions 1–3)

The first three characters of any VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), assigned under ISO 3780 by SAE International. The letter M at position 1 marks a vehicle built in Asia, and MA through MZ is the range reserved for India. Tata’s passenger and commercial vehicles built in India use:

Other Indian manufacturers you may see for comparison when cross-checking a VIN: MA3 (Maruti Suzuki), MAH (Mahindra), MBL (Hero MotoCorp two-wheelers), MD2 (Bajaj Auto). How to read a Tata VIN: position by position

Every current Tata VIN follows the same ISO 3779 17-character structure used worldwide. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a Tata:

Positions 1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. Every Tata built in India carries MAT at the start of its VIN, whether it’s a Nexon built at Sanand or an Ace truck built at Pantnagar; the specific plant is identified later, at position 11.

Positions 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

These five characters encode the model line, body style, engine/fuel type (petrol, diesel, CNG, or electric), and restraint system, the block that separates a Tiago from a Tigor, or a Harrier from a Safari, despite each pair sharing a platform.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the single most important character in any VIN. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Tata VIN is mistyped or altered, the check digit won’t match, and a compliant decoder will flag the VIN as invalid.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle, identical worldwide under ISO 3779. Skim the chart below to translate yours:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Tata’s, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.

Position 11: Assembly plant

The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. Tata builds vehicles across several Indian plants: Pune (Pimpri-Chinchwad, the largest, combined passenger/commercial-vehicle campus), Jamshedpur (the original site, still a major commercial-vehicle plant), Sanand (passenger vehicles including the Nexon, at a plant acquired from Ford in 2022–23), Lucknow and Dharwad (buses and commercial vehicles), and Pantnagar (the Ace small commercial-vehicle range).

Positions 12–17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific vehicle as it rolled off the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Tata VIN globally unique.

Where to find the VIN on a Tata

You can find your Tata’s VIN/chassis number in several places. The RC (registration certificate) and the chassis stamping are the two most authoritative sources; the others are useful for a quick visual check.

  • Vehicle registration certificate (RC book or Parivahan e-RC)
  • Stamped directly on the chassis frame, usually near the engine bay or front cross-member
  • Windshield or driver’s-side door jamb sticker, on most vehicles from the last decade
  • Insurance policy documents and the Tata service/warranty booklet

Tata’s own history predates the modern VIN. The company was building trucks from 1954, well before India’s rules required the current 17-character ISO format, so a genuinely old commercial vehicle may carry a shorter or non-standard chassis number. Check Tata recalls and safety information

India doesn’t use NHTSA. Recalls on vehicles sold in India, including Tata’s, fall under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). In March 2021, MoRTH inserted Rule 127C into the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, creating India’s first mandatory vehicle-recall framework, effective 1 April 2021. Under Rule 127C, a vehicle can be declared “defective” and recalled based on the volume of verified safety complaints relative to that model’s sales, with fines for non-compliance. Before Rule 127C, recalls in India were coordinated voluntarily through SIAM (the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), and carmakers, Tata included, still issue voluntary service campaigns outside the mandatory process.
