About Smart
Smart launched in 1998 as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler and Swatch, the Swiss watchmaker. The name is actually an acronym: Swatch Mercedes ART. Swatch’s involvement was short-lived; Swatch sold its stake back to Daimler within a few years of launch, and Daimler ran the brand alone from the early 2000s onward. The signature product throughout was the fortwo, a two-seat microcar built around a distinctive steel safety cell called the Tridion, small enough to park nose-in to the curb in cities across Europe and, later, North America.
Daimler sold Smart cars in the US market from 2008 through 2019. Mercedes-Benz USA discontinued Smart in the United States after the 2019 model year, citing weak demand for microcars and the cost of certifying a low-volume model to US safety and emissions standards; the final US-market Smarts were battery-electric fortwo coupes and cabriolets. Smart continued selling in Europe as an EV-only brand. In 2020, Daimler and China’s Geely formed a 50:50 joint venture, smart Automobile Co., Ltd., to develop new Smart models; the resulting Smart #1 and Smart #3 crossovers are designed by Mercedes-Benz and engineered and built by Geely in Ningbo, China, and are not sold in the US. For nearly all of its US-market history, Smart cars were built at the Hambach, France, plant known as “Smartville,” a dedicated factory Daimler built specifically for fortwo production near the German border.
Smart WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO. According to NHTSA’s vPIC database, Smart-branded passenger cars are registered under manufacturer Mercedes-Benz Cars with the following WMI:

Every US-market Smart fortwo, from the original 2008 model to the final 2019 electric fortwo, carries a VIN beginning WME. How to read a Smart VIN: position by position
Every Smart VIN built for the US market uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a Smart:
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. All US-market Smart fortwo vehicles carry WME regardless of model year, since every one was built at the same Hambach facility.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
These characters identify the specific Smart model generation and body style. Position 4 commonly distinguishes chassis generation (Smart used “E” for the 451-generation fortwo sold from 2008 through 2015, and different characters for the 453-generation fortwo sold from 2016 through 2019). Later positions in this block indicate coupe versus cabriolet body style and the restraint system fitted.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Smart VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle. Since US Smart sales ran only from 2008 to 2019, you’ll only encounter a narrow slice of this chart:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Smart, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. Positions 12-17: Serial number
