About Scania
Scania’s history starts in Sodertalje, Sweden, where Vagnfabriks Aktiebolaget i Sodertelge, known as Vabis, was founded in 1891 building railway wagons before moving into motor vehicles. A separate firm, Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Scania, was founded in Malmo in 1900. The two merged in 1911 to form Scania-Vabis, consolidating operations in Sodertalje, which remains Scania’s headquarters today.
Scania spent most of the 20th century building trucks, buses, and industrial and marine engines. It merged with carmaker Saab in 1969 to form Saab-Scania, a combination that lasted until the two businesses split apart again in 1995 and the truck and bus operation reverted to the Scania AB name. Volkswagen built a stake in Scania through the 1990s and 2000s and took full ownership in 2014, delisting the company from the Stockholm exchange. Scania WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of a VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), identify the country and manufacturer. YS2 is the WMI most widely documented for Scania CV AB’s Sodertalje operation and appears across independent VIN-decoding references as the code used on Scania truck and bus chassis worldwide.

A direct query of NHTSA’s vPIC database for “Scania” doesn’t return a current YS2 registration; the only match is a single legacy entry for Saab-Scania of America Inc, a low-volume compound WMI (1S9) tied to bus imports from the era when Saab and Scania operated as one company, before the 1995 split. That’s consistent with the underlying reality: Scania doesn’t sell new trucks or buses through the US market today, so there’s no active US regulatory filing to look up. If you’re decoding a Scania VIN, it almost certainly belongs to a European, Latin American, African, or Asian-market vehicle, and a US-focused decoder or recall lookup won’t return much for it. How to read a Scania VIN: position by position
Scania VINs follow ISO 3779, the international 17-character standard used across Europe and most of the world. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the table above. Every genuine Scania truck or bus chassis carries YS2 at the start of its VIN, identifying Scania as the manufacturer of record rather than pointing to the specific assembly plant, which is encoded later in the VIN.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This block encodes the cab family, series generation, chassis configuration, and engine. Position 4 generally identifies the cab line (P, G, R, S, or L), and position 5 identifies the series generation, so an R-cab truck on the current platform reads differently in this block than a P-cab or an older generation. Scania doesn’t publish a full, independently verifiable letter-by-letter breakdown of this block, so for a precise model read, use the decoder above rather than hand-parsing these five characters.
Position 9: Check digit
In North America, the 9th character is a mandatory check digit, calculated from the other 16 characters with a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math, required under 49 CFR Part 565. ISO 3779, the standard Scania builds to, doesn’t carry the same universal check-digit mandate outside the US market, so treat position 9 on a European-market Scania VIN as informational rather than as proof of validity on its own.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character is widely used across both North American and European manufacturers, Scania included, to indicate model year on a repeating cycle. Skim the chart below to translate yours:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Scania, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The 11th character points to the specific factory. Scania’s main truck-building sites are Sodertalje, Sweden (engines, gearboxes, axles, and final assembly) and Zwolle, Netherlands (Scania’s highest-volume plant), with Angers, France, and plants in Brazil and Argentina contributing regional production. Scania hasn’t published a verifiable plant-letter chart, so decode the full VIN above for a specific plant read rather than relying on a fixed table.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number assigned to that individual truck or bus as it left the line, making every Scania VIN globally unique.
Where to find the VIN on a Scania
Scania builds trucks and buses, not passenger cars, and neither US windshield-visibility rules nor EU statutory-plate rules require the VIN to be readable through the glass. Under EU type-approval rules for the manufacturer’s statutory plate and VIN, the VIN only has to be affixed somewhere accessible and visible, and stamped so it doesn’t wear away in normal use. In practice, look here:
- The manufacturer’s statutory plate, mounted inside the cab on the right-hand side; it lists the VIN, GVWR, axle weight ratings, and type-approval number
- The VIN stamped directly into the chassis frame rail, typically on the right side behind the front wheel, near the shock absorber mount
- The vehicle’s registration document (registreringsbevis in Sweden, or the equivalent national vehicle registration paper elsewhere in the EU)
- Scania dealer and service records
