About Saturn

Saturn Corporation was founded on January 7, 1985, as a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors, built around the pitch of being “a different kind of car company.” Rather than retrofit an existing factory, GM built Saturn a brand-new plant from the ground up in Spring Hill, Tennessee, breaking ground in 1986 and starting production on July 31, 1990. The first Saturns reached dealers that October as 1991 models.

Saturn stood apart from other GM brands on two fronts: a no-haggle pricing model that set one fixed price per vehicle, and dent-resistant polymer body panels on its early S-Series compacts that shrugged off door dings and shopping-cart scrapes. The lineup grew over two decades to include the S-Series, L-Series, Ion, Vue, Aura, Sky, and Outlook.

GM shut Saturn down as part of its 2009 bankruptcy restructuring. A planned sale of the brand to Penske Automotive Group fell through in September 2009 when Penske could not secure a manufacturer to keep building vehicles for Saturn dealers to sell. Production ended on October 7, 2009, and the last Saturn dealerships closed by October 31, 2010, making Saturn one of four GM nameplates retired in that era, alongside Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Hummer.

Saturn WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO, and NHTSA’s vPIC database now lists every historical Saturn WMI under General Motors LLC, since Saturn Corporation was folded back into GM before its closure. How to read a Saturn VIN: position by position

Every Saturn VIN, since the brand’s first car in 1990, uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. Nearly every Saturn was assembled in the United States; the exception is the second-generation Vue (WMI 3GS), which was built at GM’s Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, plant on the same platform as the Opel Antara.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math.
