About Mercury
Mercury was founded in 1938 by Edsel Ford as a mid-market brand for Ford Motor Company, slotted deliberately between the value-priced Ford lineup and the luxury Lincoln lineup. The name honors the Roman messenger god, chosen to suggest speed and modernity. Over more than seven decades Mercury sold the Eight, Montclair, Cougar, Marauder, Grand Marquis, Sable, Mountaineer, Mariner, and Milan, among others, almost always built on engineering shared with Ford or Lincoln siblings rather than on standalone platforms.
Ford discontinued Mercury in the fourth quarter of 2010. The final Mercury, a 2011 Grand Marquis, rolled off the line on January 4, 2011, and the brand’s dedicated dealer network was wound down shortly after. Because Mercury was always a Ford-owned brand built on shared Ford and Lincoln platforms rather than a separate manufacturer, its VINs are registered directly under Ford Motor Company entities, and its recalls are administered through Ford’s own systems rather than a standalone Mercury program. Mercury vehicles came off several Ford-operated assembly lines. Chicago Assembly in Illinois built the Sable alongside its Ford Taurus twin. St. Thomas Assembly, located in Talbotville, Ontario, Canada, built the Grand Marquis and Marauder, including the final Mercury ever produced. Louisville Assembly in Kentucky built the Mountaineer. Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly in Sonora, Mexico, built the Milan alongside the Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. The 1999-2002 Cougar was built at the Flat Rock, Michigan plant (then AutoAlliance International).
Mercury WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO. Because Mercury was a Ford brand, every Mercury WMI is registered to a Ford Motor Company entity, confirmed against the NHTSA vPIC WMI database:

How to read a Mercury VIN: position by position
Every Mercury VIN built since 1981 uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a Mercury.
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. The country code at position 1 tells you where the vehicle was assembled, not where the Mercury brand was headquartered (Dearborn, Michigan, alongside Ford). A Mercury assembled in Canada or Mexico carries the country code of that assembly plant, not a US code, even though the vehicle was sold through US Mercury dealers.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Positions 4 through 7 identify the model line, body style, and restraint system, and position 8 commonly encodes the engine. Because Mercury shared platforms with Ford and Lincoln, the VDS structure on a given model year often mirrors the equivalent Ford or Lincoln sibling closely, with the model-line character being the main difference.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Mercury VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle. Since Mercury production ended with the 2011 model year, you’ll only ever see character codes for 1981 through 2011 on a genuine Mercury. Skim the chart below to translate yours:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Mercury, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. Confirmed Mercury plant codes: G (Chicago, Illinois, Sable), U (Louisville, Kentucky, Mountaineer), X (St. Thomas/Talbotville, Ontario, Canada, Grand Marquis and Marauder), R (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, Milan).
Positions 12-17: Serial number
