About MAN

MAN’s roots reach back further than almost any other maker on this site. The company traces its lineage to the St. Antony ironworks, founded in Oberhausen in 1758, one of the first heavy-industry operations in Germany’s Ruhr region. Through the 19th century, separate machine works in Augsburg and Nuremberg grew alongside it; they merged in 1898, and by 1908 the combined firm had taken the name Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nurnberg AG, abbreviated M.A.N. MAN built its first commercial vehicles in 1915, a joint venture with Switzerland’s Adolph Saurer AG that put a 3-tonne MAN-Saurer truck on the road from a shared factory in Lindau, followed shortly by long-distance buses run for the Imperial Post Office.

MAN spent most of the 20th century as an independent industrial conglomerate (trucks, diesel engines, printing presses, and more) before narrowing its focus to commercial vehicles. Volkswagen took a strategic stake in 2006, expanded it to majority control by 2013, and folded MAN into a new commercial-vehicle holding company alongside Swedish truck maker Scania. That holding company was renamed Traton in 2018 and now also owns Navistar, parent of International Trucks, both covered elsewhere on this site as siblings under the same Volkswagen-owned umbrella rather than as MAN’s competitors. Today’s brand is MAN Truck & Bus, headquartered in Munich.

MAN’s production network centers on Germany and Poland. Munich is the lead plant for heavy trucks and the battery-electric eTGX and eTGS lines; Kraków, Poland is MAN’s highest-volume plant and builds across the entire range. Nuremberg supplies engines and bus chassis, Salzgitter (the former Büssing bus works, absorbed in 1971) handles components and bus production, and Steyr, Austria builds special-purpose and off-road variants. MAN’s current lineup runs from the light-duty TGL through the TGM, TGS, and flagship long-haul TGX, plus electric eTruck versions of the heavier models.

MAN WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of a VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), identify the country and manufacturer. WMA is the WMI registered to MAN Truck & Bus in Germany and is the code you’ll see on MAN-built trucks and buses worldwide.

One important caveat: MAN is not a NHTSA-registered manufacturer. A direct query of NHTSA’s vPIC database for the WMA code returns zero results, consistent with the underlying reality that MAN doesn’t sell new trucks or buses through the US market, so there’s no US regulatory filing to look up. If you’re decoding a MAN VIN, it almost certainly belongs to a European, African, Asian, Latin American, or Australian-market vehicle, and a US-focused decoder or recall lookup won’t return much for it. How to read a MAN VIN: position by position

MAN VINs follow ISO 3779, the international 17-character standard used across Europe and most of the world. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a MAN.

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the table above. Every genuine MAN truck or bus carries WMA at the start of its VIN, regardless of which plant actually assembled it; the WMI identifies MAN as the manufacturer of record, not the specific factory.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This block encodes the model series, cab type, chassis configuration, and engine family: it’s where a MAN VIN distinguishes the light-duty TGL from the medium-duty TGM, the construction- and vocational-focused TGS, and the long-haul flagship TGX, along with cab style, axle arrangement, and whether the vehicle is diesel or one of MAN’s battery-electric eTruck variants. MAN doesn’t publish a full, independently verifiable letter-by-letter breakdown of this block the way some North American truck makers do, so for a precise model read, use the decoder above rather than hand-parsing these five characters.

Position 9: Check digit

In North America, the 9th character is a mandatory check digit, calculated from the other 16 characters with a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math, required under 49 CFR Part 565. ISO 3779, the standard MAN builds to, doesn’t carry the same universal check-digit mandate outside the US market, so treat position 9 on a European-market MAN VIN as informational rather than as proof of validity on its own.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character is widely used across both North American and European manufacturers, MAN included, to indicate model year on a repeating cycle. Skim the chart below to translate yours:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including MAN, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.

Position 11: Assembly plant

The 11th character points to the specific factory. MAN’s main truck-building sites are Munich (heavy trucks and eTrucks) and Kraków, Poland (full-range volume production), with Nuremberg, Salzgitter, and Steyr, Austria contributing engines, bus chassis, and specialty builds. MAN hasn’t published a verifiable plant-letter chart, so decode the full VIN above for a specific plant read rather than relying on a fixed table.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence number assigned to that individual truck or bus as it left the line, making every MAN VIN globally unique.

Where to find the VIN on a MAN

MAN builds trucks and buses, not passenger cars, and neither US windshield-visibility rules nor EU statutory-plate rules require the VIN to be readable through the glass. Under EU type-approval rules for the manufacturer’s statutory plate and VIN (Commission Regulation (EU) No 19/2011 and its successor provisions under Regulation (EU) 2018/858), the VIN only has to be affixed somewhere accessible and visible, and stamped so it doesn’t wear away in normal use. In practice, look here:

  • The manufacturer’s statutory plate (Typenschild), riveted to the cab, most commonly on the front bulkhead under the hood or on the driver’s door pillar; it lists the VIN, GVWR, axle weight ratings, and type-approval number
  • The VIN stamped directly into the right-hand chassis frame rail, typically near the front axle
  • The vehicle’s registration document (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I in Germany, or the equivalent national vehicle registration paper elsewhere in the EU)
  • MAN dealer and service records
