About Lucid

Lucid Motors was founded in 2007 in Silicon Valley, originally as Atieva, a company that developed batteries and electric powertrains for other automakers, including Formula E race cars. In 2016 the company rebranded as Lucid Motors and announced plans to build its own all-electric luxury vehicle. That vehicle, the Lucid Air sedan, entered production in September 2021, followed by the three-row Lucid Gravity SUV, which arrived as a 2025 model. Lucid is headquartered in Newark, California, and trades publicly as Lucid Group, Inc.

Unlike legacy automakers with factories scattered across several countries, Lucid builds every vehicle it sells at a single US site: AMP-1 (Advanced Manufacturing Plant 1) in Casa Grande, Arizona. Ground broke on the 590-acre campus in December 2019, and the plant began Lucid Air production less than two years later. AMP-1 handles body-shell manufacture, paint, and final assembly for both the Air and the Gravity, meaning every genuine Lucid VIN traces back to the same Arizona facility.

Lucid WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO and registered with NHTSA. Here are the WMIs you’ll encounter on Lucid vehicles:

Both codes are registered directly to “LUCID USA, INC.” in NHTSA’s official vPIC WMI database, with 50E covering the Air sedan and 7UU covering the Gravity SUV. Since Lucid builds every vehicle at its single Casa Grande, Arizona plant, you won’t see the string of regional WMIs that older, multi-country manufacturers carry. If your Lucid VIN begins with 50E or 7UU, it’s a genuine Lucid. A Lucid VIN starting with an unlisted WMI may indicate a data-entry error or a fraudulent VIN. How to read a Lucid VIN: position by position

Every Lucid VIN uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard, the same format required on every road-going car sold in the US since 1981. Because Lucid is a brand-new automaker with no vehicles built before that standard existed, every Lucid VIN you’ll ever encounter follows this exact structure. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. Position 1 (the digit or number) and position 2 tell you the vehicle is US-built and registered to Lucid USA, Inc.; position 3 separates the Air (50E) from the Gravity (7UU).

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This block encodes the model line, series or trim, motor configuration, and body variant. Position 4 identifies the model, for example G appears on Gravity VINs, while Air VINs use a different character for the sedan line. The remaining VDS characters distinguish drive-unit output, seating configuration (Gravity is offered with 5 or 7 seats), and trim tier such as Touring or Grand Touring. Because Lucid’s lineup is still small compared with legacy brands, the VDS is comparatively simple, but the specific letter-to-trim assignments are Lucid’s own internal code and are best confirmed with the decoder above rather than guessed from position alone.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Lucid VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.

Since Lucid didn’t exist as a car manufacturer before the Air launched for model year 2022, you won’t see any Lucid VIN with a model-year character earlier than that. The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Lucid, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.

Position 11: Assembly plant

The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. Because every Lucid ever built comes from the same AMP-1 plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, this position stays constant across the entire model lineup rather than varying by market the way it does for automakers with multiple global plants.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific Lucid as it rolled off the AMP-1 line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Lucid VIN globally unique.
