About Lancia

Lancia was founded in Turin, Italy, in 1906 by Vincenzo Lancia, a former Fiat racing driver. The company built a reputation on engineering firsts: the Lambda of 1922 introduced unibody (monocoque) construction years ahead of rivals, and the Aurelia of 1950 debuted the first production V6 engine. That streak carried into Lancia’s rally era, where the Fulvia, the mid-engined Stratos, and the turbocharged Delta Integrale won Lancia more World Rally Championship manufacturer titles than any other brand in the sport’s history.

Fiat took control of Lancia in 1969, and the brand later passed into Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and then Stellantis, formed in 2021 from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Groupe PSA. Lancia withdrew from the United States in 1982 after quality and reliability problems and thin sales, and it has never returned; the brand today sells only in continental Europe.

For most of the 2010s and early 2020s, Lancia’s entire model range was a single car: the aging Ypsilon supermini. Stellantis has since put a revival plan behind the brand. A new-generation Ypsilon launched in 2024, built in Zaragoza, Spain, on the same small-car platform as the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa Electric, offered as a hybrid and a full EV with sportier HF variants. A second model, the Gamma, is due after summer 2026 as a hybrid and electric crossover built at Stellantis’s Melfi plant in Italy, reviving a nameplate last used on Lancia’s 1976-1984 flagship. A previously announced Delta revival for 2028 did not appear on Stellantis’s most recent European roadmap, so treat it as unconfirmed. Lancia showrooms currently operate in Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, and the brand remains absent from Germany, the UK, and North America.

How to read a Lancia VIN: position by position

Every Lancia built since 1981 uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
