About Keystone

Keystone RV Company was founded in 1996 in Goshen, Indiana, and grew quickly enough that Thor Industries, the largest RV manufacturer holding company in North America, acquired it in November 2001 for roughly $145 million. Keystone remains headquartered in Goshen and operates most of its production across Elkhart County, Indiana, the traditional heart of the US RV industry. Keystone’s lineup includes Montana, Cougar, Springdale, Hideout, Bullet, Passport, and Sprinter. One naming note worth flagging: Keystone’s Sprinter is a line of wide-body travel trailers and fifth wheels, its first-ever product line, and has no relationship to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. If you’re decoding a VIN and searching for “Sprinter” results, make sure you’re looking at Keystone RV listings and not commercial van listings; the two share a name and nothing else.
Keystone makes only towable RVs: travel trailers and fifth wheels. It does not build motorhomes. That distinction matters for VIN decoding. Motorized RVs from brands like Winnebago are typically built in two stages: a chassis manufacturer such as Ford, Mercedes-Benz, or Freightliner builds and VINs the engine and chassis first, and the motorhome maker completes the coach afterward, so the VIN’s first three characters often trace back to the chassis company rather than the RV brand on the outside. A towable has no engine and no chassis-stage manufacturer to account for. Keystone builds the entire unit, frame to roof, and assigns the VIN itself. That means a Keystone VIN decodes directly to Keystone, every time, with none of the two-stage-manufacturer complexity that trips people up on motorized RVs.

Keystone WMI code (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), identify who built the vehicle. WMIs are assigned by SAE International and registered with NHTSA. Per NHTSA’s vPIC database, Keystone RV Company’s registered WMI is:

A handful of unrelated small businesses also happen to have “Keystone” in their name in NHTSA’s records (a motorcycle builder, a few independent trailer fabricators), but none of those are Keystone RV Company and none share the 4YD code. If your VIN starts with 4YD, you’re looking at a genuine Keystone RV product. If it starts with anything else, decode the full VIN with the tool above to confirm what you actually have; it may be a different manufacturer entirely, or a non-standard chassis number from before the modern VIN format.

How to read a Keystone VIN: position by position

Every Keystone VIN, since the company only dates to 1996, follows the modern ISO 3779 17-character standard already in force by the time Keystone opened its doors. There’s no older, shorter chassis-number format to worry about with this brand. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. Unlike a motorized RV, there’s no chassis-stage manufacturer to look for here; 4YD is Keystone’s own code, assigned directly by Keystone at the point of manufacture.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

These positions describe the trailer’s body type, weight class (GVWR), and brake configuration. They do not spell out the specific model name (Montana, Cougar, Springdale, and so on) or the floorplan number in plain text; that level of detail lives on Keystone’s own build sheet and on the RVIA (RV Industry Association) certification label affixed to the unit, not in the VIN itself. Decoding the VIN confirms the weight class and general vehicle type; pairing it with the certification label gives you the full floorplan picture.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting formula and modulo-11 math, the same method used across the entire auto and RV industry. If a single character is mistyped, or misread off a decal that’s faded after years of sun exposure, the check digit won’t validate, and a compliant decoder will flag the VIN as invalid.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to a model year on a repeating 30-year cycle:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, Keystone included, because they’re too easily confused with the digits 1 and 0.

Position 11: Assembly plant

This character identifies the specific Keystone facility that built the unit. Keystone has concentrated the bulk of its production in and around Goshen and Elkhart County, Indiana, historically running numerous plants in the area at once, so the same model line can carry different plant codes depending on the exact building it came out of. Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence number for that specific trailer or fifth wheel. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Keystone VIN globally unique. Keystone’s own paperwork sometimes references the last six or eight characters as a shorthand “unit number” when you call customer service, so keep the full VIN and that shorthand handy together.

Where to find the VIN on a Keystone trailer

Because a towable has no engine bay or windshield, the label locations differ from a car or motorhome:

• Federal certification label: typically on the front lower exterior of the trailer, near the road-side (curb-side) front corner, or just inside the entry door frame
• VIN plate: often riveted to the front lower frame rail or A-frame, visible from underneath or beside the hitch
• RVIA certification label: usually placed near the main entry door, listing the VIN alongside weight ratings
• Vehicle title, registration, and any Keystone warranty paperwork
