About Jayco

Jayco was founded in 1968 by Lloyd and Bertha Bontrager on their farm in Middlebury, Indiana, in the heart of Elkhart County, the traditional center of American RV manufacturing. Lloyd built a prototype fold-down camping trailer and named the new company after his own middle name, Jay, paired with a jaybird theme for the freedom of camping; the earliest prototypes were even sold as the “Jaybird” series (JayEagle, JayHawk, JayRobin), and a flying blue jay became Jayco’s logo. Jayco stayed independent and family-run for decades before Thor Industries, the largest RV manufacturing group in the world, acquired it in 2016 for roughly $576 million in cash. Jayco is now a wholly owned Thor subsidiary alongside Starcraft RV, Highland Ridge, and Entegra Coach, and a sibling brand to Airstream (covered separately on this site), though each Thor brand still designs and builds its own products.

Jayco builds two different kinds of RVs, and that split matters for VIN decoding. Its towable lineup (Jay Flight, Jay Feather, Eagle, White Hawk, Pinnacle and North Point fifth wheels) has no chassis-stage manufacturer: Jayco builds the trailer frame itself, so a Jayco travel trailer or fifth-wheel VIN decodes directly to Jayco’s own WMI. Its motorized lineup (Precept, Alante, Melbourne, Seneca, Terrain, and other Class A/B/C motorhomes) is built in two stages, like every other motorhome maker: a chassis manufacturer, Ford, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation, or Mercedes-Benz, builds and VINs a rolling or cutaway chassis first, and Jayco then completes the coach as “final-stage manufacturer.” Because the VIN assigned at the incomplete-vehicle stage generally stays with the vehicle through completion, a Jayco motorhome’s VIN usually decodes to the chassis builder, not to Jayco.

Jayco WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of a VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), are assigned by SAE International and registered with NHTSA. Per NHTSA’s vPIC database, Jayco holds the following registrations:

The second entry uses a six-character WMI rather than the usual three; SAE extends the WMI to six characters for manufacturers building small annual volumes. For the vast majority of Jayco travel trailers and fifth wheels on the road, 1UJ is the code you’ll see.

How to read a Jayco VIN: position by position

Jayco RVs built since the early 1980s follow the same ISO 3779 17-character VIN standard used across the industry. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI tables above. On a towable, this position confirms Jayco built the unit. On a motorhome, it identifies whichever company VIN’d the chassis stage, which is frequently not Jayco.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

On a Jayco travel trailer or fifth wheel, these positions are coded by Jayco itself and relate to body style, axle configuration, and length class. On a chassis-stage VIN (Ford, Freightliner, Mercedes), these same positions describe the chassis model, GVWR class, engine, and brake/restraint system rather than the Jayco floorplan. Either way, the exact floorplan and factory options aren’t fully recoverable from the VIN alone; those live on Jayco’s own build sheet and certification label.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting formula and modulo-11 math. If a single character is mistyped or misread off a weathered decal, the check digit won’t validate.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to a model year on a repeating 30-year cycle, identical across all manufacturers:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, because they can be confused with the digits 1 and 0.

Position 11: Assembly plant

Identifies the specific factory that built that stage of the vehicle. For Jayco’s own towables, this points to a Jayco production line in Middlebury, Indiana, or one of its other Elkhart County or Twin Falls, Idaho facilities. For motorhomes, it points to a Ford, Freightliner, or Mercedes-Benz chassis plant.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The production sequence number for that specific unit at that plant. Jayco’s own systems also track vehicles by a coach or trailer serial number printed on the certification label; keep both numbers on hand when ordering parts or requesting service records.

Where to find the VIN on a Jayco

Where you look depends on whether you own a towable or a motorized Jayco:

• Travel trailers and fifth wheels: the VIN is stamped on a metal plate on the trailer’s frame or A-frame near the front, and repeated on the federal certification/compliance label, typically mounted on the exterior sidewall or just inside the entry door
• Motorhome chassis VIN plate: driver’s side door frame or door latch post, or visible through the windshield on the dashboard (Ford and most cutaway chassis); a plate near the frame rail on Freightliner units
• Federal certification/compliance label (motorhomes): Jayco’s own coach-level label, usually near the driver’s door or entry step
• Vehicle title, registration, and insurance documents

Recalls on a Jayco-badged RV can be issued by Jayco itself (coach items like furnace venting, wiring, or cabinetry) or, on motorhomes, by the chassis manufacturer (chassis, brake, or engine items), since both are legally distinct manufacturers on the same unit. To check a specific VIN:

1. Decode the VIN above to confirm the model, model year, and which WMI applies
2. Search NHTSA’s recall database by VIN, which covers both Jayco coach recalls and, where applicable, chassis-OEM recalls

4. If a recall traces to the chassis, contact that manufacturer’s dealer network directly, since chassis recall repair is administered separately from Jayco’s own program

Recent examples show both sides of this pattern. Jayco recalled certain 2024-2025 Jay Flight SLX travel trailers (recall #9901636) after some units left the factory without a furnace exhaust vent, which could let carbon monoxide enter the cabin. It also recalled certain 2025 Jay Feather Air travel trailers (#9901613) for an incorrect axle weight rating on the certification label, and a batch of 2024 Pinnacle and North Point fifth wheels (#9901615) whose air conditioner soft-start device could overheat. All were coach-level issues handled directly by Jayco. Recalls are repaired free of charge regardless of the vehicle’s age or ownership history.

(Seneca Super C), or Mercedes-Benz (Melbourne and Terrain), VINs the rolling or cutaway chassis first, and that VIN generally stays with the vehicle after Jayco completes the coach as final-stage manufacturer. Jayco does hold its own WMI (1UJ), but it’s registered for trailers; motorhomes decode to whichever chassis builder VIN’d that unit. That’s normal, not an error.
