About Hummer

Hummer has two distinct chapters, and knowing which one your vehicle belongs to matters for decoding its VIN correctly. AM General began selling a civilian version of its military Humvee in 1992, badging it simply “Hummer.” In 1998, General Motors bought the Hummer brand name from AM General, though AM General kept building the original H1 under contract through 2006. GM then developed two GM-platform models under the Hummer name: the H2 (2002), built on a GM full-size truck platform at AM General’s Mishawaka, Indiana plant, and the H3 (2005), built on a smaller GM platform at GM’s own Shreveport, Louisiana plant. GM discontinued the entire Hummer brand in 2010, retiring it after a $150 million sale to Chinese machinery maker Tengzhong collapsed when Chinese regulators rejected the deal, part of GM’s broader bankruptcy restructuring that also shed Pontiac and Saturn.

The name returned in October 2020, but as something different: GMC Hummer EV, an all-electric sub-brand under GMC rather than a standalone marque. The GMC Hummer EV pickup began production in late 2021 as a 2022 model, followed by the GMC Hummer EV SUV. Both are built at Factory ZERO, GM’s dedicated electric vehicle plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan. Because it is a GMC model, a Hummer EV VIN decodes as a GMC vehicle, not a Hummer, and it shares WMI codes with other GMC trucks and SUVs. Hummer WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO and is registered with NHTSA’s vPIC database. How to read a Hummer VIN: position by position

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

These five characters identify the model, body style, restraint system, and drivetrain. On the H1, this block reflects AM General’s military-derived build codes. On the H2 and H3, it follows standard GM truck conventions distinguishing body style and engine. On the GMC Hummer EV, it distinguishes pickup from SUV, trim level (such as Edition 1), and battery configuration.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math.
