This page is the Haima VIN hub: Haima-specific WMI codes, assembly plant codes, a position-by-position guide to reading a Haima VIN, where to find the VIN on your Haima, and how to check a Haima vehicle for open recalls in China.
A quick note on market coverage and company status: Haima Automobile is a Chinese manufacturer based in Haikou, Hainan Province, and its vehicles have never been sold in the United States. This page therefore uses China’s own vehicle-identification and recall framework, administered by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), rather than the NHTSA references on this site’s US-market pages. We checked NHTSA’s vPIC manufacturer database directly and it returns zero registered WMIs for Haima, confirming no US import history. Haima is also a genuinely obscure automaker outside China with thin English-language documentation and years of financial distress; where sourcing on a detail is thin, this page says so rather than guessing.
About Haima
Haima traces back to January 1992, when the Hainan provincial government and Mazda formed a joint venture, Hainan Mazda Motor Co., Ltd., to build Mazda-derived vehicles for China (the name blends “Hainan” and “Mazda,” and also reads as “seahorse” in Chinese). In 2006, FAW Group acquired Mazda’s stake. Haima was barred from using the Mazda name afterward but kept the right to build older Mazda-derived platforms and use licensed Mazda technology in-house, which is why early models like the Haima 3 and Freema visibly share bones with older Mazdas; later models such as the S5 crossover and 7X-E MPV moved further toward in-house engineering.
Haima expanded through the 2000s and 2010s to three plants, two in Haikou and one in Zhengzhou, with combined capacity once estimated near 400,000 vehicles a year, and in 2013 sold over 157,000 vehicles domestically. That peak didn’t last: sales collapsed through the back half of the 2010s as domestic EV brands surged and Haima was slow to move off combustion platforms, and the company (Shenzhen-listed as 000572) spent years fending off delisting risk and posting large losses. In July 2021, FAW transferred a 49% stake to Hainan Development Holdings at no cost, leaving Haima majority-owned by Hainan state interests rather than FAW.
Haima’s current status is precarious, not healthy, but the company has not shut down. In June 2026, reports circulated that regulators had permanently revoked Haima’s manufacturing qualification along with several other struggling legacy Chinese automakers; Haima disputed this days later, stating both its Hainan and Zhengzhou plants still hold valid licenses for combustion and new-energy vehicles, and subsequent reporting indicated the original claim had overstated what happened. Whatever the paperwork says, actual output is close to nominal: Haima’s own Q1 2026 disclosures show retail sales of roughly single-digit units per month (3, 4, and 5 vehicles in January through March), a quarterly loss, and revenue down more than 25% year over year, following a 2025 annual report showing negative operating cash flow and a deeply negative retained-earnings balance. Haima is now pursuing a turnaround built around new-energy models, including an EX00 series it describes as in production, an EX02 battery-swap variant, and an announced 2026 Huawei partnership for a co-developed SUV. Whether that pivot changes the trajectory isn’t established yet; treat Haima as a brand in active, unresolved crisis, not one that has failed outright or stabilized.
Haima WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of a VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), identify who built the vehicle and where, under the ISO 3780 standard. The letter L at position 1 is reserved for vehicles built in China. Public WMI registries (compiled from ISO/SAE-sourced lists, not NHTSA, since Haima was never imported to the US) list one code for the brand:
| WMI | Country of build | Vehicle type |
|---|---|---|
| LH1 | China | FAW-Haima passenger vehicles (Haikou / Zhengzhou) |
We could not independently verify this code against NHTSA’s vPIC database, since vPIC only carries WMIs tied to vehicles legally imported into the US, and no Haima vehicle qualifies. Treat LH1 as the best-documented WMI for the brand rather than an NHTSA-confirmed one.
How to read a Haima VIN: position by position
Haima VINs built to the modern standard follow the same ISO 3779 17-character structure used worldwide. The 17 characters split into three blocks:
| Block | Positions | What it encodes |
|---|---|---|
| World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) | 1 – 3 | Country and manufacturer |
| Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) | 4 – 8 | Model, body, engine, restraints |
| Check digit | 9 | Math-validated control character |
| Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) | 10 – 17 | Model year, plant, serial |
Here is what each position means specifically on a Haima:
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. A Haima-built vehicle should carry LH1 at the start of its VIN. Because Haima’s export footprint is small and poorly documented in English, don’t assume a Chinese-market vehicle without this prefix is a counterfeit; it may simply be a model or era not reflected in the sources available for this page. Decode the full VIN with the tool above to see what it returns.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
These five characters encode the model line, body style, and powertrain, the block that would distinguish a Haima 3 sedan from an S5 crossover, or a combustion 7X-E from a battery-electric variant. Because Haima has run several distinct generations, from Mazda-derived sedans to newer new-energy models like the EX00 and EX02, the VDS layout isn’t as uniform across the brand’s history as it is for automakers on one continuous platform strategy.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the single most important character in any VIN. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Haima VIN is mistyped or altered, the check digit won’t match, and a compliant decoder will flag the VIN as invalid.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle, identical worldwide under ISO 3779. Skim the chart below to translate yours:
| Char | Year | Char | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| R | 2024 | F | 2015 |
| S | 2025 | E | 2014 |
| T | 2026 | D | 2013 |
| V | 2027 | C | 2012 |
| W | 2028 | B | 2011 |
| X | 2029 | A | 2010 |
| Y | 2030 | 9 | 2009 |
| 1 | 2031 | 8 | 2008 |
| 2 | 2032 | 7 | 2007 |
| 3 | 2033 | 6 | 2006 |
The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Haima’s, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. Haima’s documented manufacturing base is split between two sites: Haikou, Hainan Province (the original headquarters plant) and Zhengzhou, Henan Province (added as the company expanded). We don’t have a verified public mapping of individual plant-code letters to these sites; decode the full VIN with the tool above to see the specific plant recorded for your vehicle.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific Haima as it rolled off the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Haima VIN globally unique.
Where to find the VIN on a Haima
You can find your Haima’s VIN in several places. The vehicle registration certificate and the chassis stamping are the two most authoritative sources for a Chinese-market vehicle.
- Vehicle registration certificate
- Stamped directly on the chassis or firewall in the engine bay
- Windshield or driver’s-side door jamb sticker, on newer models
- Sales invoice and warranty/service booklet from an authorized Haima dealer
Haima’s product line spans over three decades, from 1990s Mazda-derived sedans through today’s new-energy EX-series, so older cars may not follow the current format consistently, and documentation on early Hainan Mazda-era vehicles specifically is limited. For older, non-standard VIN formats, see our classic car VIN decoder guide.
Check Haima recalls and safety information
China doesn’t use NHTSA. Vehicle recalls, including Haima’s, are administered by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) under the Regulation on the Administration of Recall of Defective Auto Products, in effect since January 1, 2013. SAMR’s Defective Product Administrative Center collects complaint data, investigates defects, and publishes recall notices; manufacturers must file a recall plan and notify sellers once a defect affecting a batch, model, or vehicle type is confirmed.
The fastest way to check a specific Haima vehicle:
- Decode the VIN with the tool above to confirm the model and model year
- Search SAMR’s recall query system at qxzh.samr.gov.cn, which covers recalls from 2014 onward by VIN
- Contact a Haima-authorized service center with your VIN; given the company’s shrinking dealer footprint, service availability may be more limited than for an actively selling brand
Recall repairs confirmed through SAMR’s process are carried out free of charge by the manufacturer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I decode my Haima VIN?
Type the 17-character VIN from your Haima’s registration certificate, chassis stamping, or door jamb sticker into the decoder at the top of this page. Results return in seconds and include model, model year, and body style. No registration is required.
Where is the VIN on my Haima?
The most reliable sources are your vehicle’s registration certificate and the number stamped directly onto the chassis or firewall. Newer Haima models also carry a windshield or door-jamb sticker, similar to cars sold in other markets.
Is Haima sold in the USA?
No. Haima has never sold vehicles in the United States, and NHTSA’s vPIC manufacturer database returns no registered WMI codes for the brand, confirming it has no US import history. Haima vehicles are sold in China and exported in limited numbers to some other markets.
Is Haima still making cars in 2026?
Yes, in a limited, financially strained way. Haima disputes reports that its production licenses were revoked and says both its Hainan and Zhengzhou plants remain qualified to build combustion and new-energy vehicles, but its own 2026 disclosures show retail sales in the single digits per month and a continuing quarterly loss. The company is now betting on new-energy models, including an EX00/EX02 series and a 2026 Huawei-partnered SUV, as a path back to relevance. This is an actively developing situation.
Is the Haima VIN decoder free?
Yes. VinDecoderPlus decodes every Haima VIN free of charge with no sign-up or credit card required.
What does the VIN tell me about my Haima?
A VIN decode confirms the original factory configuration where data is available: model, model year, body style, and assembly plant. Given Haima’s limited documentation and small recent production volumes, some fields may return less detail than for a high-volume global brand. A VIN does not record paint colour, odometer reading, accident history, or ownership chain.
