About Bugatti

Automobiles Ettore Bugatti was founded in 1909 in Molsheim, then a German city in Alsace and now part of France, by Italian-born engineer Ettore Bugatti. The original company built some of the most celebrated cars in motorsport and design history: the Type 35 Grand Prix car, the most successful race car of its era; the Type 41 Royale, a 12.7-liter luxury car of which only six were made; and the Type 57, including the Atlantic coupe styled by Ettore’s son Jean Bugatti. The marque declined after Jean’s death in 1939 and Ettore’s in 1947, and the original company was sold off for its aviation parts business in 1963.

The name was revived twice. Italian entrepreneur Romano Artioli built the Bugatti EB110 in Campogalliano, Italy, through a new company, Bugatti Automobili S.p.A., from 1991 to 1995, before that venture folded. Volkswagen Group acquired the Bugatti trademark in 1998 and relaunched the marque as Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. in Molsheim, France, producing the Veyron (2005-2015) and Chiron (2016-present) in a small hand-built workshop called the Atelier. In 2021, Volkswagen restructured Bugatti into a joint venture, Bugatti Rimac, with Croatian EV maker Rimac Group taking a 55 percent majority stake and Porsche AG (majority-owned by Volkswagen) holding the remaining 45 percent. In April 2026, Porsche agreed to sell that 45 percent stake to a consortium led by US investment firm HOF Capital; the deal is pending regulatory approval and expected to close before the end of 2026, ending Volkswagen’s roughly 28-year link to Bugatti.

Every modern Bugatti, Veyron, Chiron, Divo, Centodieci, Mistral, and Tourbillon alike, is still hand-built at the Atelier in Molsheim. Bugatti produces only a few dozen to around 100 cars a year, making it one of the lowest-volume automakers whose vehicles are still fully street legal and NHTSA-registered in the United States.

Bugatti WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO. Because Bugatti builds far fewer than 1,000 vehicles a year, federal VIN rules (49 CFR 565.15) require a six-character manufacturer identifier: the usual three-character WMI at positions 1-3, plus a second block repeated at positions 12-14 to guarantee uniqueness. How to read a Bugatti VIN: position by position

Every Bugatti built since 1981 uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard, adapted for low-volume manufacturers. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. Unlike a mass-market brand, the country code reflects which era and entity built the car: VF9 for the current Molsheim-built Veyron/Chiron generation, ZA9 for the 1990s Italian-built EB110, and V39 for cars titled under the newer Bugatti Rimac joint venture.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

These positions identify the model series (Veyron, Chiron, Divo, Centodieci, Mistral, Tourbillon, and their variants), engine configuration, weight class, and restraint system. Given the tiny production runs, individual VDS codes can be specific to a single limited-edition model.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Bugatti VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.

Position 11: Assembly plant

Modern Bugattis carry a plant code identifying Molsheim, France, the only site where the Veyron and Chiron generations have been built. Cars with the historical ZA9 WMI trace instead to the now-closed EB110 workshop in Campogalliano, Italy. Since Bugatti has never run more than one active plant at a time, position 11 mostly confirms which era and factory built the car, rather than distinguishing parallel plants as it does for high-volume manufacturers.

Positions 12-17: Low-volume identifier and serial number

For most manufacturers, positions 12-17 are simply the production serial number. Because Bugatti qualifies as a low-volume manufacturer under federal VIN rules, positions 12-14 repeat the second half of its six-character manufacturer identifier (for example, 795 for VF9-prefixed cars), and only positions 15-17 carry the actual production sequence number. Combined with the rest of the VIN, this still makes every Bugatti globally unique, a fitting scheme for a brand that has never built more than a few thousand cars in its entire history.
