A quick note on market coverage, and a distinction worth getting right: Brilliance does not sell vehicles under its own name in the United States. Two very different things carry the “Brilliance” name, and mixing them up is easy. The first is BMW Brilliance Automotive, the Shenyang joint venture that builds BMW-badged and Zinoro-badged cars for the Chinese market; those vehicles use the WMI code LBV and are covered on this site’s BMW VIN decoder page, because the finished car is a BMW, not a Brilliance. The second is Brilliance’s own vehicle lineup, sold under the Zhonghua and Jinbei nameplates, which is what this page covers. A Zhonghua sedan and a BMW 3 Series built at the same Shenyang campus are not the same product and don’t share a badge or a WMI prefix.

About Brilliance

Brilliance Auto traces back to Jinbei Automobile, a Shenyang-based maker of light commercial vans founded in the 1990s. Brilliance China Automotive Holdings, listed in Hong Kong, grew out of that van business and added the Zhonghua sedan brand in 2002 with help from Italian design house Giugiaro. In 2003, Brilliance and BMW formed BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) to build BMW-badged cars for the domestic Chinese market, a joint venture that became by far the most valuable part of the Brilliance family and the reason most people outside China have heard the name at all.

That value split matters, because Brilliance’s own-brand business has struggled for years while the BMW joint venture prospered. Huachen Automotive Group, the unlisted parent holding company controlling Brilliance China Automotive Holdings, defaulted on bonds in 2020 with total liabilities eventually reported near RMB 63 billion. A Shenyang court accepted a creditor’s bankruptcy restructuring petition that November, and after a rocky process, it was resolved in March 2024: Shenyang Automobile, a newly created state-owned auto investment platform, acquired 100% of Huachen for roughly RMB 16.4 billion (about USD 2.3 billion), including Huachen’s 29.99% stake in the listed Brilliance entity. Separately, BMW raised its own stake in the BMW Brilliance joint venture from 50% to 75% in February 2022, paying roughly EUR 3.6 billion and extending the venture to 2040. In short: the maker of BMW-badged cars in China is now majority-owned by BMW itself, while Brilliance’s own-badged business answers to a Shenyang municipal government vehicle after emerging from bankruptcy restructuring.

Brilliance’s own-badged output has narrowed sharply. The Zhonghua passenger-car line, once the company’s flagship, has been wound down and by 2025 contributed little to group results. Jinbei, covering vans and light commercial minibuses, is the more active survivor, with export partnerships reported in 2025 across Vietnam, Egypt, Tanzania, Turkmenistan, and Tunisia, alongside longer-standing markets in Russia, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. None of this reaches the United States: Zhonghua and Jinbei aren’t certified for the US market, and Brilliance holds no US manufacturer registration.

Brilliance WMI codes (positions 1–3)

The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), assigned under ISO 3780 by SAE International. China’s WMI range starts with the letter L. Because Brilliance-badged vehicles aren’t sold or titled in the United States, they carry no entry in the NHTSA vPIC database (the US registry of manufacturer WMIs); the code below comes from standard international WMI reference compilations rather than a US regulator, so treat it as a strong reference point rather than an NHTSA-certified fact.

How to read a Brilliance VIN: position by position

Every current Brilliance-family VIN follows the same ISO 3779 17-character structure used worldwide. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a Brilliance-badged vehicle:

Positions 1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. LSY marks a Zhonghua or Jinbei built by Brilliance itself; a Shenyang-built BMW or Zinoro carries LBV instead, because that is a different manufacturer entity (the BMW Brilliance joint venture) making a different badge.

Positions 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

These five characters encode the model line, body style, engine or fuel type, and restraint system, the block that distinguishes a Zhonghua sedan from a Jinbei minibus.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the single most important character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of the VIN is mistyped or altered, the check digit will not match, and a compliant decoder will flag the VIN as invalid.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle, identical worldwide under ISO 3779. Skim the chart below to translate yours:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Brilliance’s, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.

Position 11: Assembly plant

The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. Brilliance’s own-badged vehicles are built at plants around Shenyang, Liaoning province, the historic home of the Jinbei van and Zhonghua sedan lines; the exact plant code depends on model and production era.

Positions 12–17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific vehicle as it rolled off the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Brilliance VIN globally unique.

Where to find the VIN on a Brilliance vehicle

You can find the VIN on a Zhonghua or Jinbei in several places, mirroring international convention since the vehicle follows the ISO 3779 standard.

• Vehicle registration certificate issued by Chinese traffic authorities
• Stamped directly on the chassis or engine bay firewall
• Windshield or driver’s-side door jamb sticker, on most vehicles from the last decade
• Insurance policy documents and the Brilliance/Jinbei dealer service record

The Zhonghua passenger-car brand has been largely wound down since; the Jinbei van and minibus business remains active and continues to be exported outside China.
