The chassis code shows up in the VIN at positions 4 to 6. Both US-market generations are notably simple on this point: there is no turbo option, no hybrid, and no diesel offered here, unlike the 1.5L turbo and e:HEV hybrid versions of the current-generation HR-V sold in Japan and Europe under the same nameplate. Position 9: Check digit

Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on a fixed 30-year cycle defined by ISO 3779 and SAE J853. It is identical across every manufacturer and every vehicle type, not just Honda:

The letters I, O, and Q are skipped because they’re too easily mistaken for 1 and 0.
